How interior paint cost is estimated
Use this calculator to estimate interior painting before deciding whether to DIY or hire a crew. Wall area, coat count, and prep drive most of the range.
Painting can look simple until prep is counted. Patching, sanding, stain blocking, trim detail, and furniture protection can change labor time.
What affects paint cost?
Wall area
Painters price by the amount of surface to prepare and coat. More wall area means more paint, masking, cutting-in, rolling, and cleanup.
Coats
Dark color changes, new drywall, stains, and low-hide colors can need more coats or primer, increasing both material and labor.
Prep
Nail pops, cracks, texture repair, caulk, sanding, and stain blocking can take longer than painting itself on older walls.
Access and protection
High ceilings, stairwells, furnished rooms, cabinetry, floors, and trim detail increase setup time and risk.
Cost assumptions
- Installed range includes typical paint, supplies, masking, labor, cleanup, and overhead.
- Heavy drywall repair, lead paint work, popcorn ceiling removal, and exterior painting are not included.
- The estimate assumes standard interior walls and normal access.
FAQ
Do painters charge by wall square footage or floor square footage?
Good estimates are tied to paintable surface area, not just room floor area. Ceiling height, windows, doors, trim, and prep all matter.
Why does prep change painting cost?
Prep adds labor before paint goes on. Patching, sanding, priming, caulking, and protecting surfaces can make a simple room take much longer.
Does premium paint lower total cost?
Sometimes. Better paint can cover faster and last longer, but it costs more per gallon. Total value depends on color change, surface condition, and labor rate.
